Stories of my songs & poems

These are the stories of how and why I wrote some of my songs & poems:

Story of my poem, "The Dreamer and the Hummingbird"

I wrote this poem , "The Dreamer and the Hummingbird" for a woman I met on an internet dating site,  named Linda Cardineau.  I liked it so much I used the same title for the collection of my poetry and song lyric book. I enjoyed meeting Linda  on the internet  very much. She is a wonderful person I am sure. But we didn't actually meet face to face.  The poem is the first poem in the book. The more I thought about the poem the more I realized the words also applied to my Angel Muse.  But if anyone knows Linda please forward this email; I have don't have a way to get in touch with other than I know lives on Long Island, New York.

Later I recorded the poem in the studio and included it on my CD, "Collection of my poetry."

It is for sale from me with my order form attached by mail. I hope you will purchase the CD and enjoy this and the other poems on the CD.

Story of "Across the Border Just in Time"

I wrote  this song about a friend who shall remain nameless. I'll just call him the "fisherman."He was living in Phoenix, Arizona at the time. He probably worked a regular job. He also sold drugs: cocaine and weed (marijuana). One day there was a knock at the door at home and he without much thought he flushed $7000 worth of cocaine down the toilet. He had become nervous and jerky about the police and the mafia and the Mexican mafia. They were all after him on a daily basis. He had reached a point where he knew he had to do something. He just wasn't sure what it was. The first thing he did was to get his girl friend and her children out of town. He flew them back to his home town in New York State. Then on his way back to his apartment the next day, the "little voice inside" said; "it is time to go."

He left his apartment, his clothes, his truck and his tools and left Arizona and flew home to NY State. He knew they were getting close......they were after him. He had to go.

He told me this story after church one Sunday. The lyrics of this came to me so fast that I had to find something to write on and something to write with. I found a stubby pencil and a brown paper grocery bag and I wrote this song. I wrote it down before it left my mind and got away from me.

He later he became a minister and gave his life to God. I wrote the song, "Across the Border Just in Time."

Later I recorded the song in the studio and included it on my CD, "Across the Border" Later that same year I had a stroke that seriously affected the left side of my body and my ability to play the guitar. A second stroke affected my voice and my ability to sing. I work hard daily with my physical therapy and am determined to play and sing again. But the song, "Across the Border Just in Time" is on my CD, "Across the Border".

It is for sale from me with my order form by mail. I hope you will purchase the CD and enjoy this and the other songs on the CD.

The lyrics of this song are also in my book, "The Dreamer and the Hummingbird". You can purchase this book in any retail book store. You can also purchase it from me, autographed.

Story of Eye of the Storm

I wrote this song over 21 years ago, the month before Easter, 1988. This is a three part story.

First: I decided stop drinking alcohol realizing it was not good for me. The "Little Voice" inside, I have come to know as my Angel  Muse,  told me, "If I made this sacrifice (stop drinking), they would give me a special song".

Second:  I stopped drinking that  Saturday night. The next Monday, at work I answered the phone talking to a co worker about a recent corporate take-over, he said it is like a hurricane down here.  I said you will be ok Marty; you're in the Eye of the Storm. I returned to my desk with tears in my eyes. I had the overwhelming feeling that this phrase "Eye of the Storm" was a title of something brewing in my mind. That evening I wrote the song "Eye of the Storm".

Third: I  played the new song for my teacher, Eric. He liked the song so much and said the bridge was so nice, that I should put it first. I said: If I do that I'll have re-write the ending. He said ...... "ok". Ok? It was ok with him; he wasn't going to re-write the ending....... I was. So, I re-wrote the ending.  The song was finished.

Many years later I recorded the song in the studio and included it on my CD, "Spiritual Songs."  Later that same year (2005)I had a stroke that seriously affected the left side of my body and my ability to play the guitar. A second stroke affected my voice and my ability to sing. I work hard daily with my physical therapy and am determined to play and sing again. But the song, "Eye of the Storm" is on my CD, "Spiritual Songs".

It  is for sale from me( with my order form) by mail. I hope you will purchase the CD and enjoy this and the other nine songs on the CD.

The lyrics of this song are also in my book, "The Dreamer and the Hummingbird". You can purchase this book in any retail book store. You can also purchase it from me, autographed.

Story of my song "The Mention of His Name"

An acquaintance of mine was in a lot of emotional pain. He got what he thought he wanted  in a situation and it turned out that it was not at all what he wanted. He felt great pain and he wanted relief from the pain. He wanted a reversal but in this situation reversal was not possible. He called his mother, a friend of mine. She gave him some solid advice: she said when he felt the pain to just say the name of Jesus. He did and each time he said the name Jesus, the pain lessened. She later called me and told me the good news that he no longer suffered and was feeling better.  Her son found relief in just saying the name of Jesus. It was this thought that made me think of the power of just saying His name. Then I said His name Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. This was on my mind when the lyrics of the song came to me.  I wrote the song, "Mention of His Name".

Later I recorded the song in the studio and included it on my CD, "Spiritual Songs."  Later that same year I had a stroke that seriously affected the left side of my body and my ability to play the guitar. A second stroke affected my voice and my ability to sing. I work hard daily with my physical therapy and am determined to play and sing again. Story of my song, "You Lift me Up"

I wrote the song, "You Lift Me up" for my sister's wedding.  My sister Sue and I had never been close.  There were no kind words spoken between us. She was my older sister; she talked non-stop and I had not found my voice yet. There was a desire on my part to bridge the gap between us. I just did not know how.  She married and later her husband had an accident and was injured with a broken neck. Much later when she remarried I was asked to sing in her wedding.

I wanted very much to write a song that would be well received and also be appropriate for the occasion. She had told me she had gone through many ugly ducks in her search for her "swan". It was this image I held in my mind as I wrote the song, "You Lift Me Up." I sang it for her and her new husband Ray.

But the song, "Up Lift Me Up" is on my  CD, "Spiritual Songs".

It is for sale from me with my order form by mail. I hope you will purchase the CD and enjoy this and the others on the CD.

The lyrics of this song are also in my book, "The Dreamer and the Hummingbird". You can purchase this book in any retail book store. You can also purchase it from me, autographed.
